Sustainable development commitment

Perho CTBC’s commitment in brief: Perho Culinary, Tourism & Business College is committed to training responsible professionals as ambassadors for sustainable gastronomy and tourism.

Respect for nature now and in the future is Perho CTB College’s starting point when we are pioneering builders of new learning environments and learning models as pioneers in cooperation with the ELO Foundation.

Agenda 2030

The Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development is Finland’s national strategy, drawn up by the National Commission on Sustainable Development, also acting as a concrete tool. It is a key tool for the implementation of targets in Finland for items in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda).

The ELO Foundation for the Promotion of Finnish Food Culture and Perho Culinary, Tourism & Business College published their own sustainable development measure commitments in May 2017. The commitments have a common heading, titled

“We offer new insights into sustainable gastronomy and tourism through education and communication.”

We want gastronomy and tourism to become the mainstream. In order for this to become reality, we need gastronomy and tourism experts who promote sustainability.

The authors of the commitment have created concrete action plans, challenging actors in the industry to begin to implement. In the 2019/20 academic year, the Sustainable Development Working Group carried out a self-assessment at Perho CTBC.

According to the commitment, Perho CTBC will pilot a sustainable education model to train professionals who will be able to use our forests, fields and waters wisely and act with respect for the raw materials and nature.

Perho CTBC are pioneers in building new types of learning environments and learning models to help students incorporate sustainable development in their personal life choices and working-life decisions. Making choices in line with the principles of sustainable development will become a natural part of the students’ professionalism and something they want and are able to convey to others too. Perho CTBC graduates will be sustainable development ambassadors who will challenge workplaces to make responsible choices. During their on-the-job learning periods, competence demonstrations, apprenticeships and examination events, the ambassadors will improve responsibility aspects in the company.

As a new learning environment, Perho CTBC has acquired Longininoja field next to the Malmi campus. This enables the students to see and experience where food comes from, how it is transferred ecologically and in line with sustainable gastronomy from the field to the kitchen and ultimately on the customer’s plate. The field functions as a phenomenon-based learning environment, combining sustainable development, entrepreneurship, product development and expertise in raw materials with various parts of the curriculum, all as it happens in working life.
