If you are a foreigner who lives in Finland, you can study for the qualification of Restaurant and Catering Services fully work-based in English and become a Restaurant Cook or a Restaurant Waiter / Waitress.

Work-based studies – how it works?

In the work-based studies of Restaurant Waiter / Waitress or Restaurant Cook you will study by apprenticeship or training agreement. You must have a working place in a restaurant and your employer is willing to sign an apprenticeship or training contract with you and Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business College.

During the studies students come to school for two to four days per month for theory and cooking or customer service lessons depending what they have done before. All the competence tests and evaluations for vocational competence will be done at student’s working place.

Each student will have a personal competence development plan. Perho signs an agreement and your employer must give you guidance, feedback and evaluations during your practice.

Entry requirements

  • you are a foreigner who lives in Finland
  • you have a sufficient level of English language skills
  • you do not have any vocational qualification
  • you are working in restaurant or you have previous work experience in restaurants at least one year
  • passed aptitude test

Selected applicants will be invited to the aptitude test based on their application and supporting documents, including educational certificates and motivation letter.

Points are awarded and counted from

  • upper secondary qualification
  • sufficient level of English language skills
  • previous work experience in restaurants
  • work place and employer who is willing to sign an agreement
  • during the aptitude test we pay attention to following questions
    • career plan and motivation to study restaurant and catering services
    • vision and image of working in restaurants
    • realistic preconditions to study
    • health and ability to work in the restaurant and catering business
    • prior studies in restaurant and catering services
  • points from the written test’s results
  • other previous education and courses
